Material · wool

Dyed wool.

Every symbol can be cast. This is hand-spun wool, the way it first existed, on a loom.

Fired clay.

Unglazed terracotta. Chalky, dry, pitted where the grog burned out.

Material · brass

Hammered brass.

Struck and polished, going green where it was handled.

Material · lacquer

Black lacquer.

Deep and wet, with green flake caught under the coat.

Material · jade

Jade.

Lit from inside, veined where the stone decided rather than the weaver.

Material · gold

Leaf gold.

One in the whole drop. Your wallet decides which material you get.

What you can do with them

Your
symbols.

Scattered, each one its own work, and each one yours for nothing, whether you won the sheet or not.

Lay them out

Into one
grid.

You choose the size and the order. From 4 × 4 up to the full 29 × 28.

Burn

Then burn
them.

The symbols are destroyed. This cannot be undone.

Weave

What is left
is one work.

Your symbols become a single artwork, carrying every motif and material that went into it.

02

The work

812 symbols, taken from Azerbaijani carpets.

Each one was woven before it was ever drawn: a sign for water, for a bird, for protection, passed from loom to loom until it became shorthand. In 2023 they were collected onto one sheet, 500 mm square, 29 across and 28 down, and printed once.

Kilim puts that sheet back on the loom. A pattern decides where each symbol goes, and they are dealt from light to heavy, so the pattern shows up as tone. Every symbol is used once, and none of them changes shape.

03

The orders

Ten ways to lay out the same 812 symbols.

Nothing changes but the place each symbol sits.

FAQ

The parts, in one place.

What do I get for bidding?

Symbols, free: one for every dollar you bid, sent to you in the same transaction. The sheet itself is a single 1/1 and goes to the highest bid.

What if I am outbid?

Your money comes back in full. The symbols your bids sent you are already yours and stay yours.

Do I have to weave?

No. A symbol is a finished work on its own. Weaving is there if you want to spend them.

Can I undo a weave?

No. The symbols are burned. That is what makes the grid worth what it took.

How big can a grid be?

From 4 × 4 up to the full 29 × 28. The whole sheet takes 812 symbols.

When does it open?

The date is not set yet. Leave your email and you will hear first.

Where do I bid?

Here, when bidding opens, with a wallet on Robinhood Chain. No allowlist, no registration.
